Why "Abnormal Things"

The story so far

I've spent eighteen years building cabinets by hand, and another fourteen-plus years on the other side of the business — sourcing panel goods, hardware, and finishing systems for shops just like the one I'm building now. I've seen this trade from both ends: the bench and the supply chain.

Cousint's Custom Cabinets is what comes next. We're raising a dedicated shop on twelve acres in Candia, New Hampshire — timber included. A five-head moulder, a CNC router, and a laminate & veneer press are going in alongside a partnership with ApprenticeshipNH, so the next generation of cabinetmakers gets a real shop to learn in, not just a classroom. The building itself is designed to run on solar power and cold-climate heat pumps, with big, well-insulated windows for natural light and a view of the property we're building on.

My family and I bought this land in 2019, right before the pandemic hit, moving up from Connecticut for a job. It sits on Patten Hill — named for the family that settled this ground back in the 1700s — and it's still mostly woods today: old stone walls, a couple of ancient apple trees and lilacs, and the footprint of a one-room schoolhouse and farmstead that stood here a century ago and shows up on none of the maps since. Everything we're building starts from here.

The second half of the name isn't a joke. If it's made of wood and it's unusual, we'll figure out how to build it — right now that means a 14-foot stitch-and-glue skiff taking shape alongside the cabinet work. Bring us your kitchen. Bring us your weird idea. We're built for both.

What we do now

Kitchen refinishing & appliance panel matching

Spray finishing, full refinish jobs, and panels cut and finished to match — the fastest way to start a project with us today. Cut-to-size cabinet parts, milling, and mouldings below.

Finishing & Kitchen Refinish

Spray finishing for your doors, color matching, and full kitchen refinish jobs. Some finish work is subbed out to trusted finishers — quoted and coordinated by us either way.

Appliance Panel Matching

New dishwasher, fridge, or range and the face panel doesn't match your cabinets anymore? We cut and finish a replacement panel to match your existing style.

Cut-to-Size Panels & Parts

Cabinet and closet panels, edgebanded rips, and drawer stock — cut and edgebanded to your exact spec with our free online calculator. You handle the build.

Millwork & Custom Mouldings

Running our own moulding profiles means matching existing trim, or creating a profile that doesn't exist yet.

Custom Milling

Rough lumber and live-edge slabs, sourced through local wholesalers, milled to the dimensions your project actually needs.

Door & Drawer Blanks

5/8" × 2-1/4" blanks, cut from 14" up to 10' long, dadoed on one long edge for your drawer boxes. Baltic birch or solid maple, clear-coat finished and ready to assemble.

Cut to Size

Cut-to-size panels, rips & closet parts

We cut it. You build it. Keep it custom without the overhead of owning and running your own shop.

We do the part of the job most contractors and DIYers can't do cleanly at home — chip-free panel cuts, straight edgebanding, precise shelf-pin drilling. We don't build or install — you (or your craftsman) handle that part. No fixed catalog to page through: standard cabinet-industry sizing (widths in 3" steps from 9" up to 30", wider on request; 3/4" thick up to 30" wide, stepping up to 1" from 30"–42" per the KCMA shelf-loading rules) as the guardrails, your dimensions inside them. Need it trimmed to final length after a test-fit? We'll do that too — most cut-to-size shops won't. Panels & edgebanded rips are live today; S4S surfaced lumber, simple mouldings (crown & the like), drawer boxes, and closet hardware are next. Laminate & veneer panels are available now too, sourced through local pressers while we build toward our own press — delivered to our NH shop (no sales tax), then trimmed and cut to your exact size with no distributor markup added. Typical lead time 3–4 weeks depending on material availability. Ask about extended storage on larger orders. Lumber yards and contractors: ask about dealer pricing.

How we drill it

The 32mm system — not a new idea, just done right

Every pre-drilled panel gets the same industry-standard line-boring spec cabinetmakers have used for decades: 5mm holes, 32mm on-center, set back 37mm from the front edge, symmetric top to bottom. It's the same spacing Blum, Hettich, and every major European hardware line build their shelf pins and hinge plates around — so your shelves, pins, and hardware line up whether they came from us or somewhere else.

Face frame stock, too

Bring your own face-frame build

We also cut cabinet boxes to accept a face frame, and sell the linear stock to build the frame itself — square edge, our 3/16" beaded profile, or a custom profile we mill to match what you're replacing. Pick it from the Face Frame Stock option in the builder above.

Drag to size it

Cabinet box builder

Grab the bottom-right corner and pull the box to the size you need — width and height follow standard cabinet sizing as you drag. Drag any shelf or partition to reposition it, add doors and drawers, and we'll work out the hardware: Blum hinges and drawer slides only, sized to fit.

Drag the pink corner handle to resize. Drag a teal shelf or magenta partition to reposition it. Width snaps to 3" steps, 9"–36".

European frameless construction — full overlay

Doors and drawer fronts mount directly to the box, no face frame. 3/16" reveal between every pair of faces (door-to-door, door-to-drawer, drawer-to-drawer), doors run 1/2" shorter than the cabinet height, and every drawer gets its own 3/4"×4" stretcher below it, hidden behind the faces except for that 3/16" reveal centered on it.

Building face-frame instead? This calculator's math is frameless-only — for face-frame jobs, you account for your own sizes and reveals, and we'll cut the box sides plus your doors, drawers, and face-frame stock (stock or custom widths) to the dimensions you give us.
